Accessing holiday cheer can be very challenging after someone important to you dies. Expectations of togetherness and celebration can increase the loneliness and frustration of grief. While others seem to be cheerfully planning the days ahead, grievers struggle to share in this spirit and often end up feeling like an outsider. This workshop will focus on the multiple ways the holidays can affect male grievers and discuss strategies you can use in getting through these difficult days.
The format used for this workshop includes 15 minutes of an individual describing his experience dealing with the holidays after his wife died followed by 15 minutes with a grief and loss educator discussing: common challenges men face during the holidays; how the holidays can affect the grief process; and examples of how rituals can be helpful when grieving. The workshop will conclude with 15 minutes for Q and A.
We look forward to having you join us for this FREE workshop.

Men in our culture are expected to be strong, resilient, and able to cope on their own. Society expects them to accept the death of a loved one and move on. We do not admit that men should grieve leaving them alone to suffer in silence. The National Widowers’ Organization and our Men’s Grief Network, declared “National Men In Grief Day” to raise public awareness about a problem which is largely unrecognized and scarcely addressed.
Therefore, we are organizing a special webinar featuring a forum of men sharing their stories and the resources available to help them.

AJ Coleman, author of “Keep Those Feet Moving” will share his story of loss and provide his widower’s 8-step guide to surviving and thriving against all odds in a webinar hosted by the National Widowers’ Organization.
Coleman says. “Many of us don’t know or understand what our life’s purpose is or how to achieve it. I didn’t know my life’s purpose for a long time. Sometimes it takes an unthinkable event to occur in order for the purpose to reveal itself. For me, it began with a cancer diagnosis. Not mine, it was my wife’s diagnosis—brain cancer, with a prognosis of less than two years to live. From that moment on, my entire perception of life changed. The world looked different. I cried for a few moments and then collected my thoughts. I decided that no matter what was coming, I would rise up and fight alongside my wife. It was during my wife’s fight, and then ultimately when I lost her, that I discovered my life’s mission: to inspire those directly or indirectly affected by cancer and other personal challenges to keep moving forward. However, to be completely honest, it took me some time to figure things out. In fact, it was a full five years after my wife’s initial diagnosis before I finally broke my silence through blogging—I haven’t looked back since.”

A frequent question asked by widowers is about returning to the dating world. This new step is challenging to the widower and their family members for a variety of reasons. To address these questions and issues the National Widowers’ Organization will present a free online seminar on July 26, at 8:30pm (Eastern Time).
The event will feature a widower sharing his story with Christine Baumgartner, a widow who is a professional dating and relationship coach. There will be opportunities for questions and answers from the attendees.

In this program, Dr. Harold Ivan Smith, co-author of A Partnered Grief and Dr. Robert Geibert, a gay widower, talk about the uniqueness of grieving the death of a husband or partner. Bob’s husband, a healthy sixtyish nurse-educator said, “I think I am going to die,” collapsed and died in their home. Bob, also a nurse, had experienced the death of patients and his parents during his career, but not a husband! We will discuss his grief experience at the 4-year mark and on the cusp of the holidays.
